WHAT IS UNITY?
Since 1889, the Unity movement has
been a clear voice for positive, practical living. Its
publishing house and one of seven Silent Unity Prayer ministries is
located at Unity School of Christianity
in Unity Village, MO. The activities and products and services for the 1000+ ministries
in the world are
provided by the Association of Unity Churches International which is
located in Lee's Summit, MO.
Unity is often classified as part of a
broader movement called New Thought.
However, while the teachings of New
Thought organizations proclaim the divinity of humanity, they don’t
officially establish Jesus as a standard. Jesus is an elder brother and
a "way shower" to those in Unity.
Because of a similarity in names,
sometimes Unity has been confused with other organizations. There is no
connection between Unity and Unitarianism, or between Unity and the
Unification Church.
Unity sees worship as uplifting God’s
Spirit in us in positive, joyous ways. It seeks not to emphasize our
sins (mistakes) of the past, but instead gives attention to the good
that exists in all of us. The focus in on what can be done in the now to
transform our lives and ourselves.
Unity has always taught that there are
spiritual laws that are as limiting or as liberating as the laws of
physical sciences. The purpose of most Unity textbooks is to show us
what these spiritual laws are and how to use them to cast off habits of
thinking that result in sickness, poverty, frustration, loneliness and
pain.
Unity isn’t a theology. It doesn’t
have a creed that must be sworn to or rites and practices that must be
performed. Unity is more a teaching and an attitude, than a doctrine or
dogma. Unity is open ended. We don’t feel that our teachings
incorporate all Truth or the final Truth. We believe that the search for
Truth is as much a part of Truth as finding it.
We recognize that ultimately each
person must find Truth in themselves and for themselves.
