WHAT IS UNITY?

Since 1889, the Unity movement has been a clear voice for positive, practical living.  Its publishing house and one of seven Silent Unity Prayer ministries is located at Unity School of Christianity in Unity Village, MO.  The activities and products and services for the 1000+ ministries in the world are provided by the Association of Unity Churches International which is located in Lee's Summit, MO.

Unity is often classified as part of a broader movement called New Thought.

However, while the teachings of New Thought organizations proclaim the divinity of humanity, they don’t officially establish Jesus as a standard. Jesus is an elder brother and a "way shower" to those in Unity.

Because of a similarity in names, sometimes Unity has been confused with other organizations. There is no connection between Unity and Unitarianism, or between Unity and the Unification Church.

Unity sees worship as uplifting God’s Spirit in us in positive, joyous ways. It seeks not to emphasize our sins (mistakes) of the past, but instead gives attention to the good that exists in all of us. The focus in on what can be done in the now to transform our lives and ourselves.

Unity has always taught that there are spiritual laws that are as limiting or as liberating as the laws of physical sciences. The purpose of most Unity textbooks is to show us what these spiritual laws are and how to use them to cast off habits of thinking that result in sickness, poverty, frustration, loneliness and pain.

Unity isn’t a theology. It doesn’t have a creed that must be sworn to or rites and practices that must be performed. Unity is more a teaching and an attitude, than a doctrine or dogma. Unity is open ended. We don’t feel that our teachings incorporate all Truth or the final Truth. We believe that the search for Truth is as much a part of Truth as finding it.

We recognize that ultimately each person must find Truth in themselves and for themselves.

five basic principles of Unity:

· God is absolute good and everywhere present.  Many paths lead to the one loving God.

God’s love for us is always unconditional and forgiving.

· Human beings are created of divinity by the Divine, the Christ spirit within.

Our very essence is of God, and therefore we are inherently good.  We believe in original blessing, not original sin.

· We create our experiences by the activity of our thinking.

Everything in the manifest world has its beginning in thought.

· Prayer and meditation are creative thinking.

Prayer heightens our connection with God and brings us to wisdom, healing, and prosperity.

· A person must also live the Truth that he or she knows.

Knowing and understanding the laws of life, also called Truth, are not enough.

Millions of people have been introduced to Unity through the publishing house's Daily Word and Unity magazine; through the Association of Unity Churches International's Contact magazine and Teens on Quest, and through the joint publication of the companion books The Quest and Adventures on the Quest.

HONORING DIVERSITY WITHIN THE UNITY MOVEMENT

We believe that all people are created with sacred worth. Therefore, we recognize the importance of serving all people within the Unity family in spiritually and emotionally caring ways. We strive for our ministries, publications, and programs to reach out to all who seek Unity support and spiritual growth. It is imperative that our ministries and outreaches be free of discrimination on the basis of race, color, gender, age, creed, religion, national origin, ethnicity, physical disability, or sexual orientation. Our sincere desire is to create spiritually aware organizations that are nondiscriminatory and that support diversity.

In our effort to reach out to all people as did our Way-Shower, Jesus Christ, we support the modification of our facilities to make them accessible to all people, regardless of physical challenges; the translation of our materials into Braille and other languages; and respect for the wonderful variety of human commitments and relationships.

We encourage ministers, teachers, and others within Unity to honor the strength of diversity within their spiritual communities. It is with love and in celebration of our unity; in the midst of our wondrous diversity, that we affirm this position.
