Our Current Leadership

Spiritual Leader & Licensed Unity Teacher - John R. Knowles

A Note from John Knowles:

As a member of our Unity Church for over thirty years, I have had the privilege of serving nine years as President of the Board of Trustees, lead the Y.O.U. and youth programs and performed probably every duty associated with this ministry in one form or another, and it has been my pleasure and joy to do it. However I consider it my greatest accomplishment and honor to be our church’s first Licensed Unity Teacher.
It is my general impression that many people would like to know more about the Licensed Unity Teacher path, therefore, I would like to share some of the more relevant facts about this exciting journey.  The training required to be a Licensed Unity Teacher consists of hundreds of hours of classroom instruction, study, and practical application. This journey took me about ten years to complete; the average is about seven years. To be recognized by the Association of Unity Churches, one must pass a battery of testing including a verbal and written psychological, as well as a written and oral test on all the material studied. The study includes the History of Unity, Metaphysics, Bible Study, Counseling Skills, Learning Styles, Communication Skills, Prayer and Meditation and much, much more. It is a challenging study that many do not finish. There are currently only about 900 Licensed Unity Teachers in the entire Unity movement, including those that are no longer active. Licensed Unity Teachers are part of the ministerial team; they officiate marriages, baptisms and funerals, can teach classes for SEE Credit and can generally fulfill all capacities of a minister. A Licensed Unity Teacher can become a minister by participating in the Association’s Licensing in the Field Program. I would be happy to answer any questions anyone may have about classes at Unity Village.

Unity ministers and Licensed Unity Teachers perform weddings, memorial services, and baptisms for people of ALL faiths.

Surely the presence of God is in this place,
I can feel God's mighty power & God's grace;
There's a holy hush around us, I see glory in each face.
Surely the presence of God is in this place!

Please join us in prayer for our church's prosperity: "With thankful hearts
and guided by God, we create a ministry crowned with success in finances as well as service to our
church community and our greater community."

Our Thoughts are Prayers
Our thoughts are prayers, and we are always praying.
Our thoughts are prayers, listen to what you're saying.
Seek a higher consciousness, a state of peacefulness,
And every thought becomes a prayer.

Our goal is to honor diversity of ways of prayer and the common humanity of all people who are looking for ways to grow, to become more loving, more wise.  In fact, Unity Church itself does not have a conclusive unitary method of prayer, although there are common elements among its various practices.

One of the Unity Church's most nearly universal elements is that the time of prayer is called "the silence."  The silence is a frame o awareness entered into for the purpose of putting ourselves in touch with Infinite Wisdom so that our souls may listen to the "still small voice" (I Kings 19:12).  Another element is the spirit of thankfulness for answered prayer.

It is often helpful to begin the silence by reminding ourselves that the Presence that we know as God does not have what we need.  Rather God is what we need.  This third common element of Unity prayer serves as a reminder that it is not necessary to inform God of needs during our times of prayer.  The Unity Church believes that we are never separate from God and that our time of prayer is either to establish or to re-establish our awareness of that Truth.  We pray to know God more fully; we believe God already knows us.

To enter the silence we need to lead ourselves into a tranquil state and ultimately be silent so that we can hear and feel what the Presence would have us know, and therefore do.

Let Peace begin with me!
